MAIL THEFT ON THE RISE
The City of Dewitt Police Department would like to alert all residents that the number of fraud and theft reports continues to climb in our community and nationwide, with an emphasis on checks that are sent through the mail. There has been a least one instance of a public exterior mailbox that was recently forced open at the DeWitt Post Office and several occurrences of mail taken from residential mailboxes, the date range could be as early as June 18th, 2023 to present. If you have mailed or were to receive any checks through the mail, please verify that they have arrived at their destination.
The USPS advises that “… if you must mail a check, avoid the mailbox and bring the envelope directly inside the post office versus an unsecured public-facing mailbox”. The DeWitt Police Department urges residents to keep an eye on their bank accounts for potential fraud and report suspicious activity as soon as possible. If you believe you have been a victim of fraud or theft, contact the DeWitt Police Department at (517) 669-9131.
